Nottingham - home of ice skating
It is only fitting that Nottingham - home to the National Ice Centre - should include an outdoor ice-skating rink in the city centre's Market Square as a feature of its Christmas village.
Here it is, complete with novice skaters, many of whom rely on little penguin models as skating aids.
I suppose there is some logic in that choice somewhere!
Nottingham can lay claim to being the ice skating capital of the UK.
The National Ice Centre (NIC) (home of the Nottingham Panthers) contains the first twin Olympic-sized ice rink to be constructed in the UK.
Located just east of the city centre, close to the historic Lace Market area, the NIC now includes the Nottingham Capital FM arena.
The first rink and the arena were opened on 1st April 2000 by one of Nottingham's Olympic Gold Medalist stars - Jayne Torvill. The second Olympic Rink opened the following year.
