To Be a Highway Man

This stretch of road leads down to my house. It has been flooded, off and on, for the last month.

Water was beginning to run through the garden of my neighbour's house. The Department of Infrastructure had several times been asked to come and clear the roadside ditches. Unfortunately nobody had turned out.

Half jokingly last night I suggested to my neighbour that the two of us should set to and clear out the ditches the moment the weather cleared up.

It did clear up for a while this morning and then the telephone rang....

It took us two hours to clear out the ditches that you see and get drain rods through the various gulleys.

Water is now running properly and draining away.

The ultimate irony was that the man in the Department of Infrastructure drove past in his small van. The van slowed down but I was unable to tell from the look on the driver's face whether he was pleased or annoyed with our handiwork!
