Stone Cows

The entrance to Nunwick Hall at Great Salkeld. Two very imposing gateposts topped by a pair of stone cattle (posts about 18 feet high) I don't know the history of these unusual posts topped with these rather ugly statues and I can't seem to find out easily - nodding off at 11pm doesn't help. I pass them quite regularly. They face each other each with a shield (family crest?) and for some reason both cattle are missing the ear and horn facing the roadside.
Once again surrounded by hopeful hungry sheep - this time hundreds, all who want to be my friend.
