Georgian Perfection, King Street, Manchester...
Few people remember that before the Industrial Revolution, Manchester was a pretty Georgian market town. 'The best builded in all Lancashire.' Our Victorian forefathers had no worries in sweeping it away and building their industrial metropolis with a skyline of cotton mills. Later they realised that what they had created wasn't that attractive and they went in for a building spree that created some of the stunning Victorian architecture the city enjoys. Little of the Georgian town remains. There is St. John Street, now occupied by doctors and lawyers practices. And there is this beautiful house in King Street. King Street was the fashionable address of Georgian Manchester. As the industry developed the people flew to the clean air of surrounding villages like Chorlton and Didsbury. King Street was redeveloped as an exclusive shopping street and it remains so. Somehow, this house remained intact. It's now a branch of trendy Jack Wills...
