Grimsay wheelhouse

A wheelhouse is an Iron Age - around 2000 years ago - dwelling that is typical of the Western Isles. They are circular in shape with the inside separated by spokes into various small cells. This one just opposite the house has been excavated and left as it was when the excavation finished so you can get a feel for the size and shape of it. All sorts of interesting features can be seen. There is even a website about it. Better images than mine have been taken from a kite and can be seen here. You do have to go to the Outside West Lothian section and then scroll down a fair way to Uist. Worth the scrolling in my opinion!
There are several other ones nearby that have not been excavated - it was a relatively busy place in those days.
As ever Eaval in the background dominates the view.
