Parish Church Of St John The Baptist, Crawley

We went to Crawley again today as we had some important things to get and in between the shopping and the showers (and not being blown away in the wind!), I took this picture of Crawley's Anglican Parish Church.

This view is looking NW from Haslett Avenue. Much of the south wall is 13th and 14th Centuries, while most of the north side of the Nave that includes an aisle was rebuilt in the 19th Century along with the chancel. The lofty tower is partly 15th Century with much rebuilding at the very beginning of the 19th Century. It is a very fine tower and contains a good peal of bells which sound great. I used to hear them while waiting for a train home from Crawley College on the evening practice. The tower has been described as being more Yorkshire than Sussex and I have some agrement at that, but in some respects it also has a feel of a more distant, Westerley direction. Whatever regional style it has, it is one of the best church towers in Sussex in my opinion.
