Langdon Bay, White Cliffs, Dover

A glorious Sunday, what a difference to the gales and heavy rain last week. We decided to attempt a huge bit of the Round Kent Coast walk this time from Dover to Deal across the tops of the White Cliffs of Dover.

Starting from Dover Priory Railway station where we finished the previous section from Folkestone we ascended the Western Heights (an old Napoleonic Fort overshadowed as an attraction by Dover Castle on the Eastern Heights) only to descend onto the promanade alongside Dover Harbour. Ascending again we passed above the bustling Dover Eastern Docks and onto the National Trust site at Langdon Bay. Here are great views of the docks, the Channel and today of France.

After a fortifying coffee and scone we tackled the rest of the walk across the cliff tops; passing this view, the South Foreland Lighthouse, St Margaret's Bay and the Monument to the Dover Patrol before descending to Kingsdown and the long walk on the prom to Deal to catch the train back to Dover. This is the second time in a week to Deal, having not been there for years!

It was a superb walk, exactly12 miles station to station. The walk filled in a missing link between the Kent border near Rye and Sandwich. Only the bit between Sandwich and Ramsgate to do and we'll have walked from near Rye to Whitstable. Looks like the project might have an end in sight.

The old knee was excellent, not a twinge, so it might not need surgery after all.
