M and I went to see 12 Years a Slave. I admit it's a wonderfully made film, but it's a gruelling experience to watch; almost unrelentingly "sick in the pit of your stomach", and not really something I'd recommend - unless you think slavery isn't all that bad, in which case you do need to see it...
