Bits and Bobs!

My name's Kate64 and I'm an addict!

I've bought another book this evening!!!!!

Just back from an enjoyable evening at a book talk; not part of the Bath Literature Festival this time, but one of the many talks put on by an amazing independent book shop that we have in Bath, described by Alexander McCall Smith as, “One of the finest bookshops in the world.” Book talks at Toppings are always a very civilised affair, with a glass of wine on offer (or two if you drink the driver's glass!) and canapés to accompany the talk.

Tonight's book:

Winter by Christopher Nicholson: With Winter, Christopher Nicholson delves into the later life of novelist Thomas Hardy and his romantic obsession with the leading actress, Gertrude Bugler, in the stage production of Tess of The d’Urbervilles.

I went to the talk with my mother as she knew Gertrude Bugler and her daughter, from when she was a child and lived in the same Dorset village as Gertrude. My mother used to go to Gertrude's house on Saturdays to cook sweets, and she was allowed into Gertrude's 'front' room to see the mementos that she had been given by Hardy. It was a very interesting evening, especially when my mother started to point out to Christopher Nicholson the errors he had made in his book!!
