at home with an Ivysaurus

Reflections on being an over relaxed parent

Here is ivy playing with a glow stick. Totally full of nasty chemicals with two pointy ends- probably the lease appropriate toy for a 5 month old- yet she's loving it! (This is the only picture where you could actually see Ivy in, in all the other's the entire image is the light trails she made triumphantly waving it about.)

Today I've been joking that Euan and I are particularly terrible parents. Ivy is currently rocking a bruise under one eye- we have no idea how she came by it- and by the end of today she had a mysterious impressive lump on top of her head. When she needed a nappy change on to go today- we discovered we had no wipes with us and Euan had to improvise with her blanket and the 'clean' sleepsuit that we had to change her into after her nappy leaked turned out to not be clean at all. Further terrible things we did to Ivy today include abandoning her in a creche (so Euan and I could go to a Rumba class), even though I thought the ladies running it seemed to desperately not want her, strapping her to Euan's back whilst he was doing a ballet class with a Cuban warm up (her face when he did spins was priceless) and taking her into a disco to see the lights without putting any ear defenders on her.

We're not even going to let her go to her own bed at the end of a long day- we're off to sell tickets at the cheilidh (and perhaps even get a dance in). She will however have her ear defenders on this time!

Ivy seems not to have noticed how useless her parents are though- she's been having a great day. She slept through a ballet class on Euan's back before going to a baby dance class with him. I was very pleased that Euan got an opportunity to do baby stuff with her, I get to go rhyme time and playgroups throughout the week. He was particullarly impressed with Pizza baby massage. At the creche she apparently was fascinated with a piece of shiny lycra- when we left her there at first she was making a bee line for it. After taking her to the disco and deciding it was too loud for her, she got strapped to our friend Laura's front for a nap whilst Euan and I supervised the disco (as we are two responsible adults with PVGs and in date first aid qualifications)

We're hoping she's going to sleep in her pram in the foyer at the ceilidh....
