B.A.C.K. to Basics

Spring?

Happy Spring! Merry Christmas? I'm confused!

We awoke at 3 a.m. to BJ's alarm, a simple wake-up and check to see if he needed to plow off the 2-4" forecast for the overnight hours. When he checked outside, I heard the urgency in his footsteps. I got up, mainly because the pup was now curious and would need to go out. The 2-4" had transformed into nearly 8" of snow, and it was still falling hard. What a nightmare! BJ headed into work, the pup back to sleep in his crate, and I attempted to fall into a peaceful slumber as well.... no luck.

My mind churned ... today is the first day of Spring, right? Last year, didn't we have near 50* temps, and the year before near 70* on this very day? How is it that this year, we've had two major storms in the past two weeks? How are we still dealing with extreme cold temps, near record snow fall totals and no end in sight? Why do we choose to live in Maine?

My sleep was scattered at best, and eventually I gave up and woke for the day. Lots of shoveling in store, braced my wrist and Mace and I set out to do some clean up. First on the agenda - a place for him to "go". With his small body, he looks more like he's swimming in the snow than walking. Second - the deck, walkway and front of the garage doors. By that time, the falling snow had turned to rain, and the shoveling became heavy!!

This afternoon we took advantage of Mace's nap and relaxed watching some TV. Then, it was back outside for some exercise. I stomped down a path for Mace to run on - since there would be no walk in the field today. He enjoyed running to catch up to me, taking his own path (and getting stuck), and running the wrong direction to catch me faster. I laughed as certain points in our path, all you could see was his tail - like a shark in the water on approach.

The weather folks are saying another big storm expected for Tues/Weds next week... I'm not sure, mentally, I can wrap my head around that. For now, the calendar says its spring, the view says its January, and my body says it needs sunshine!

.... bring on the sunshine!
