Physio

Today I went to the Edinburgh Physiotherapy Centre to see someone about my feet. They do free 15 minute assessment appointments, so I figured I'd use it to see if I do really need physio.

Well my right foot isn't fractured. Woohoo! But it's not entirely right either. My previous injury means that my foot has 'thickened' and become rigid to counteract the injury. It's basically been trying to stabilise itself to prevent any further damage. Once he determined it wasn't fractured, the physio wasn't worried about that foot at all. Pretty easy to fix.

My left foot on the other hand is a different story. I've sprained my ankle so many times that I've lengthened and torn the ligaments in the outside of my ankle. My ankle socket is now loose. If I don't do anything about it, it'll continue to sprain and cause permanent damage. He showed me how the ankle was supposed to sit naturally and how warped mine was.

So what next? Well basically I need a 15 week exercise programme for my left foot and a little bit of physical therapy on my right. I'll be able to start running again in a week or so, but absolutely no uneven terrain - I have to stick to road running until they start to strengthen.

So the beach half marathon in 3 weeks time isn't a possibility. The goal is to fix my feet and build my confidence in them so I can still run the Hadrian's Wall multi terrain half marathon at the end of June.

So back to see Andy, my rather hot physio next week to start my programme. Something else I learned today too is that I don't over-pronate as I previously thought - apparently my feet are pretty neutral. Score.
