A Walk in the Park

It’s just amazing what you see when you’re out and about in the sun. Today we took a quick lunchtime stroll around Princes Street Gardens and came upon the Ross Fountain, basking in the sunshine. The brightness makes it difficult to see it properly but I think it makes it look more attractive.

The Fountain was originally built in France for the 1862 Great Exhibition in London and was purchased by local philanthropist Daniel Ross at the end of the exhibition and installed at its current location in 1872. However, Daniel Ross didn’t get to see it in its final resting place, unfortunately he died before it arrived in its new home.

The sculpture depicts a group of mermaids that represent four key areas of human society: arts, science, poetry and industry.

“All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom.”

Albert Einstein
