Diary of an Edinburgher

Marrakech!

A free morning for another wander round town. We tried the fish market for lunch. The sardines were nice, but the calamari was chewy. I think we got ripped off too. Should have asked the price before we started. Never learn...

By 2:30 we were all ready at the bus station to leave for Marrakech, a three hours journey with a nousnous (coffee) stop. It took a long time to get into our hotel once we arrived in the city - traffic jams like you've never seen before!

The hotel is the best one on the trip, of course, being the last one. Though no wifi in rooms. We had twenty minutes to freshen up and head off into town for a meal. It being Friday, and spring holidays, the city is even more busy than usual.

Abdu took us the the square, where hundreds of food stalls are set up each night. An amazing sight. We had a table booked. They just brought us lots of little dishes of food, starting with bits of sheep's head and yellow/orangey globules which I think were tongue... but got better. Some of it was tasty but I'm quite over couscous, actually. Finished with sweet sweet syrup tea. I might be getting a bit used to it now...

Crossing the road here is hazardous. Even on zebra crossing, the cars just keep on coming. The trick is just to follow the leader and just not look sideways. Did feel sorry for the horses pulling the tourist carriages in the busy roads.

We had a wander round the square after the meal. Many of the performers demanded money if you pointed a camera at them. This got a bit tiresome, especially after one transvestite performer with only his eyes showing demanded money from H, who refused, and he said 'F*** you'.

This is H. She and her husband were great fun. The monkey owners forced the monkeys on to them, then demanded 100 Dirhams. They gave them 10Dh. I love the way the monkeys are holding hands. And the look on the left monkey's face!

There's a LIFT in this hotel!!!
