Road trip!

My work closes for the week between Christmas and New Year's. About a week ago, R's boss announced that they were also closing and giving everyone paid vacation! It was pretty shocking news since R is regualarly working weekends and evenings - we never thought they would close the lab for five straight days.

Since we didn't have much advanced notice to plan something, we were excited when our friends Mel and Kalani invited us to come up to Mel's parents cabin in Arnold, California - about a two hour drive east of San Jose.

We woke up at 3:30 to hit the road by 4 a.m., driving six and a half hours straight. We met up with them in Manteca for the final two our drive up the mountain to the cabin.

Here we are following Mel's dad, Tony, who drove like a bat out of hell. I finished the book seen here on the dash, "The Friday Night Knitting Club" which was pretty much the worst book I've read in five years despite the knitting theme.
