St John The Baptist, Pebmarsh, Essex
The last day of the holiday and we left Burwell at 10.15am and arrived home at 4.20pm! We had an hour's stop for lunch at Pebmarsh and with further delays getting back over the QEII Bridge (and getting some food at Burwell), it wasn't too bad a journey. I went via Newmarket, Clare, Sudbury, and Halstead down to the edge of Chelmsford, then the A130, A13 and M25.
Having been to this area of N Essex before, I decided to find a church I hadn't visited before and make a reasonable lunch stop. So we ended up at Pebmarsh which has an interesting church with very nice stained glass windows. There is also a brass here, but it is hidden under carpeting and I wasn't able to see it. By co-incidence, I bought a book on this church from a sale of items from our County Record Office last year and now I have seen this church in the flesh! At least too, it was open and very welcoming in a pleasant quiet village.
Pebmarsh is not far from Halstead, which happens to be the place that my Story character, Miranda grew up, having been born in Colchester. Halstead is an attractive town on the River Colne and stands on rising ground either side of the river.
