Wearing my stone mason's hat
We drove around most of the island of Kythera today and there were some pretty spots and most impressively, I thought, a couple of Byzantine castles perched on steep gorges. However of all we saw, I just loved the roofs of several of the old churches. This is one example - helped by the wild blue flowers that whilst being weeds here probably are some cultivated flower in the UK.
The skills of the ancients in producing buildings that last from totally local materials never ceases to amaze me - even more so when considering the location of this particular church hanging out over a 100 m drop to the bottom of the gorge below.
