The Baptismal Well, Clifford

Early morning jam making session today - using up the last of the current crop of rhubarb! Then off to Doncaster to help our daughter with some painting and tidying prior to arrival of her baby. Home again for a cup of tea and sample the jam on some toast, very nice it is too..

This little stone structure in Clifford is known as the Baptismal Well. It was the village well and reputedly supplied baptismal water to the nearby parish church of St Luke's.

However it is also referred to as Springfield Well and may have supplied water to the Springfield flax mill just down the road.

It dates from around 1840 and is built of the local stone (as is the case for many of the buildings in the villages around here)! The wrought iron bracket used to hold a lamp.

I had to wait until after about 6:30 to get the late sun on the face of the structure to show the detail and the colour in the stone.
