For a long time Babe was my favourite film. This is not an easy thing to admit to among people who take ‘film’ seriously. And I know quite a few. The film had a big effect on me. I stopped eating bacon sandwiches for about a year.

Babe is both funny and moving and surprisingly educational. It has a very simple premise; a pig wants a career change. And why not? In our post-industrial society the idea of a job for life or a single career is no longer valid. Change is the new sitting still.

People spend a lot of money attending motivational seminars and workshops to hear someone tell them that they can be whatever they want to be. I suggest they save their money and watch this film instead.

So if you ever lose your direction in life and your confidence ebbs away, just think:
if a pig can be a sheepdog,
I can be a ——- (fill in ambition of choice).

And say to yourself; "That'll do, Pig. That'll do."
