The Old Santa Fe Trail
We headed off early for Santa Fe, first of all taking Interstate 25, right down to the little town of Trinidad near the border between Colorado and New Mexico.
The first part of the drive took us past Colorado Springs - amazing scenery all the way.
Trinidad is a tiny town and on the Main Street there was the old Opera House (1882) interesting older architecture, and various monuments to the town's history. Mining in particular. Great Italian links also meant that a local pizza (to share) was delicious.
After a rest we continued on the modern Old Santa Fe Trail. - a very deserted and incredibly straight Interstate. The landscape stretched around, harsh, barren but with a magical beauty.
What it must have been like in those old days. Searing heat in the Summer. Harsh cruel Winters. Brave and valiant those early settlers. Pulling the wagon themselves if the lean horses perished. Strong stuff.
Apologies for the windscreen blip but I wanted that sense of a huge sky as we headed South.
