The Miraculous Staircase

In the church of Loretto in Santa Fe, there is a highly unusual spiral staircase with an even more unusual history. It was completed in 1878.

Apparently, they needed a staircase and held a Novina (nine days of prayer). At the end of this time a mysterious man appeared and built this out of wood. No one knew his name and he vanished without being paid. If you look closely, there is no central unifying pillar and the physics of this construction is equally mystifying.

We had an excellent walking tour (with hilarious tales and asides) and then spent a couple of hours in the Capitol Building where there is a stunning New Mexican art collection.

After that we had no choice - it had to be Margaritas at La Fonda
