Diary of an Edinburgher

A day out without Archie

Today we did something for us, not for Archie… Did feel a bit guilty, but JR took him out for a brisk walk on the Meadows this morning and he was fair puggled, so I think he would have slept the whole afternoon that we were out.

PizzaExpress sent me a birthday month offer of a (half) bottle of prosecco with two main meals, so we popped down to Stockbridge for a nosy round the shops and lunch. Popped into the Dog Shop - got a pair of those rounded scissors - may try to cut the hair a bit around his eyes so that he can see more of the world.

We passed Hector’s Cafe/Restaurant. (We noted that it was dog friendly). It was one of the first places we went for a meal when we first arrived in Edinburgh about 15 years ago. I can still remember having a table by the radiator because it was so cold - it was my birthday (July).

We noticed on the menu outside 'salt and pepper squid’ and craving after the delicious stuff we had in Oz a couple of years ago, we entered. We had a couple of glasses of prosecco, as we knew it’d only be a glass each at PizzaExpress, and the salt’n’pepper squid was rather nice. It’s usually called ‘squid rings’ here, and has never lived up to expectation.

We then tottered up the road for our lunch, via the Dog Shop, and had the nice surprise of a whole bottle of prosecco!(£20 -odd). At one point we thought we might have to share a glass with the people next to us, but that idea didn’t last long and we managed… A delicious pizza with the thinnest base ever. Followed by a chocolate brownie and coffee.

I came straight home on the bus for a lie down, but JR had some important shopping that just couldn’t wait (till she was sober). I couldn’t wait to get home to see the wee fella. But of course, I couldn’t lie down as Archie had been alone for hours and wanted to play!

We’ve done the deed. He’s booked in for a haircut, but not till August. Apparently all the dog groomers in town are very busy and some aren’t taking on new puppies. This is one recommended to us - we don’t want him shorn!!

This is him going mad in the back green - he only uses it when Tinkerbelle isn’t out...
