Suisse O Week, Day 4: Gruensee

Back to orienteering today after yesterday's rest day and it continues to be as much fun travelling up in to the mountains to compete as the events themselves. Today we travelled from Zermatt via the funicular deep inside the mountain up to Sunnegga. From there we took the gondola further up the mountain to Rothorn (3103m) then the cable car across the Findelback valley to Gruensee, back down at 2300m. Swiss engineering is incomparable! Although we were 'round the corner' from the main Zermatt valley, the Matterhorn still manages to dominate the skyline and so my blip is of competitors arriving at Assembly with the main mountain in the background.

It was tough, technical terrain today, Swiss stone pine forest with much rock and bilberry underfoot and structured relief. I made one poor route choice opting to go across a steep boulder field instead of up/down and around it and that cost me time and legs. I finished in 49th place which is well above halfway and I'm pleased with that as my navigation was pretty spot on throughout. Sadly the predicted rain arrived as we finished so we did not hang about and came back down to pick up seriously yummy desserts at Fuchs Backerei as our contribution to the evening meal at Haus Kelly!

More mountain blips here! Amazed to have hit Spotlight three times this week but then it's not difficult to get a good blip when in the mountains and the sky is blue!
