Buildings of Maidstone - The Post Office
89 Bank Street is the home of the Post Office but for most of its life the building has been associated with the Insurance business. It was built in 1913 as the district office of the Prudential in an unusual arts and crafts style. The upper floors are timber framed filled with plaster. The ground floor is of Portland Stone.
In the 4 niches are statues of Kentish worthies. (L to r) Archbishop Courtenay (who has appeared in a blip already) William Caxton (of printing frame - I didn't know he was from Kent), Sir Christopher Marlowe and Lord Avebury (a Liberal, a banker and philanthropist from Broadstairs - didn't know about him either.
This trip into town was due to the failing of the iMac which had to be taken in for some vital surgery. Yes, yes although it's an iMac I only use it as it as a Windows. Windows started in safe mode but not on normal mode. I couldn't work out why despite wasting an afternoon on trying to solve the problem. So it's gone in for repairs.
