Cowes-Torquay Powerboat Race. The Start

About 20 of the worlds fastest powerboats set off from Cowes in perfect conditions heading for the half way point in Torquay.

A Red Funnel car ferry left Cowes at the same time and amazingly by the time passengers were offloading their cars in Southampton the first of the speedboats had already reached Torquay.

After lunch and a parade in Torquay the second part of the race commenced with the first boats reaching The finish line in Cowes around 3PM.

Hundreds of spectators lined the sea wall to see the spectacle with the added bonus of some vintage planes flying overhead en-route from the Bournemouth air show.
