The Boy in York

I had a fantastic day with William. We caught an early train to York and were at Jorvik before opening. He was really interested in the artefacts under the floor when you go in and loved the ride. He was also interested in the skeletons, the swords and of course the fossilised poo!

We came out of there and met Karen of My Girl. Sadly we didn't meet Katie as she has already started school. William had a little excited/show off/four year old boy time, while we wandered up the Shambles, tasted tea, had a look at the Minster and then headed for Pizza! After a lovely lunch Karen had to head back home in time for school pick up. It was so lovely to finally meet, two years and a day since we first tried and failed to meet at the paralymipcs! It felt, at least to me, like we already knew each other and I would certainly love to meet up again, with all the children.

Having said goodbye and finished ice cream, William decided he wanted to go back to Jorvik, so as there was no queue that is what we did. This time he sat at the front of the car and I think he saw more than the first time. We then saw fudge being made and William charmed more than just one free sample out of the lady! I took him to Museum Gardens hoping he would run off some energy, but he wasn't interested, all he wanted to do was walk on the walls, so we did. Mr Independent walked ahead.

The last bit of the afternoon was spent at the Railway Museum. He liked the trains, but was slightly frustrated that he couldn't go in more of them. However he did get to sit on the drivers seat in the Mallard and discussed various levers and dials with the explainer.

While waiting for the train home I asked William what was his favourite part of the day. His reply melted me: "Spending time with you Mama!"

A good, if slightly delayed, train journey home on a very chilly train. We read the whole of the first Barney the Boat Dog book, managed to leg it over the bridge at Stevenage and catch the train back to Hitchin as it was drawing in to the station. One very tired little boy was very quickly in bed and asleep.
