Speedo
circa 2001
My brother (on the 'phone): "We're just on our way to the beach now. We had to stop for Fen to buy some Speedos."
[Voice at the other end of the 'phone]
My brother: "Oh God, no! They were shorts not trunks."
Now, to be fair to me, there have been times when I didn't look too bad in a pair of swimming trunks, as recently as three years ago, in fact. Times when I would almost saunter the short walk from the changing room to the pool, pause for a moment and then enter the water.
Currently, though, it's more of a quick wobble and hasty plunge into the shallow end. Not that this pool actually has a shallow end. It's attached to Whoop Hall, a mile or so from the cottage, where, for a princely £40 a month you can use their gym, spa pool, sauna and so on. I only use the swimming pool, though.
Twice a week, I go to swim a mile. At least that's the plan. A recent sabbatical from running and swimming (due to a misdiagnosed foot injury) has resulted in me gaining weight and losing fitness. I am, however, on the road to recovery: weight down, fitness up.
I do like this pool although it does get rather busy at times, especially during school holidays. I tend to go early or around meal times to try and miss the crowds. It was a quarter to eleven when I got to the pool, this morning, and there was every chance there would be a few people swimming up and down, so I was delighted to find that I had it to myself!
