look at that tongue

The woodpecker skips between the sunflower seeds and the suet block. You can see it's long tongue in this photo. It is so long that it 'wraps around the rear of the skull and back to the upper mandible.' It is sticky too so ideal for getting the insects in between the bark of trees. The tail feathers are stiff and used as a prop , here it is wrapped against the cage making it easier to balance.
You can see it's strong claws, the toes have a special arrangement with two pointing forwards and two backwards.
The strong muscles in the head protect the brain and a third translucent eyelid , you can see it covering the eye in the photo, protects the eye from debris when it's drumming holes in trees.
What a clever bird :)
