Cushendun harbour

Situated at the mouth of the Dun River, this little harbour on the Antrim Coast is the nearest to Scotland on the coast of Ireland -just 15 miles away.
This was the principal point of departure for the Scottish Highlands at a time when trade between Cushendun and Kintyre flourished.
The striking line of tall houses stands memorial to Clough Williams-Ellis, the famous Welsh architect who was commissioned by Ronald McNeil (the last Lord Cushendun) to design a square of mansard-roofed houses in the centre of the village.
Other additions followed, making this a village quite unlike any other in Ireland. A unique combination of traditional whitewashed dwellings sit alongside others that appear to have been transplanted from another place and time.
Perched above the village is Castle Carra, once owned by Shane O'Neill, which has commanded the landing place since the 1300's.
We are based here for a week of exploring, visiting old haunts and reminiscence.
