Voronet (Painted Monastery)
Today we drove from our base in Gura Humorului to four of the renowned Painted Monasteries in the Bucovina area of northeastern Romania. They number about a dozen and were constructed in the 15th and 16th centuries. They are painted with religious images in an essentially Byzantine style, covering the entire interiors, and most of the exteriors as well. Collectively, they have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This is Voronet Monastery, widely regarded as the most significant of them. Its foremost feature is the enormous mural of the Last Judgement covering the entire western façade of the building(on the left in this image); do view it large.
Now to bed--a bit more tomorrow.
