What does it mean to be Dutch?

Well, according to KLM, it is either bikes, tulips or clogs....

I love the fact that the Dutch are nationalistic in a very positive way. Take, for example, the plastic cup on the Amsterdam to Birmingham, KLM flight. Imprinted upon the cup were images of bicycles, tulips and clogs. Stereotypes perhaps? Who cares?

But what I really liked about this cup (and what I thought was significant) was that the bicycle is clearly thought of as something that is part of the fabric of Dutch life - and all the paraphernalia that goes with it (i.e. fabulous cycle lanes, a safe environment in which to ride your bicycle, respectful drivers - on the whole - and all the rest). Oh for the bicycle to be seen as emblematic of British life!! Some chance!
