A rarity
Well, not really a rarity. It's quite common, but I haven't seen one for years and years.
It's the very beautiful Southern Old Lady Moth (Dasypodia selenophora), and this image really doesn't do it justice.
A night flying moth, which takes refuge in dark crevices during the day, the larva feed on acacia species. It's quite large with a wing span of about 90 mm.
This one has decided to have its rest on the ceiling of our garage - you don't want to know the trials and tribulations of climbing up to get an image.
