The Red Fort

Today, we took a walk to a neighbouring village and climbed a small hill (the are on small hills in Malta) to visit the Red Tower of St. Agatha. This is one of a number of solid, square watch-towers strung along the Maltese coast - a legacy from the days when they needed to maintain a continual lookout for pirates and other raiders. They are simple structures, but in a remarkable state of preservation. The view from the roof is a spectacular 360 vista of the north-west corner of Malta. Certainly worth the effort of climbing the hill in the heat.
