In tbe footsteps of a Legend
We have had a good walk around the centre of Oxford today, admiring the magnificent architecture of the various Colleges.
This afternoon Mrs. P went shopping while I took the opportunity to visit Iffley Road.
Iffley Road is the Sports Centre for Oxford University.
In itself it is a very ordinary place and much like any other sports centre.
It has a gym, pool, sports pitches and a running track.
I was pleased when I was allowed to have a look round and feigned interest as I was shown the gym and pool.
"Do you want to see anything else?" I was asked.
"The track please" I replied.
My guide described the track as "just your ordinary track, really."
I stood on the track.
And I kept standing there. This was what I really came to see.
You see this is NOT "just your ordinary track"
It only has 6 lanes for starters, not 8.
It was here on 6th May 1954 Roger Bannister ran in a mile race.
It was a race he won in a World Record Time of 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds.
The first time anyone had run a mile in under 4 minutes.
Today I stood where legends stood before.
