Ottery tar barrel

A tar barrel of Ottery St Mary

A lovely sunny day again in Devon - tho slow wifi has prevented uploading blips for a day or Two!

A visit to Charmouth beach for some successful fossil hunting, a Devon cream tea then a visit to the unique tar barrel celebration in Ottery. An astonishing event with a massive bonfire and local groups running through the dense crowds carrying flaming and eventually disintegration barrels. They rush at you, spin and sometimes drop the barrel on the ground as the heat penetrates the thick gloves. Events are run for children, women and men with traditional family groupings taking part.

Countless blip opportunities some with barrels held high over the crowd's heads. But I like this one showing the intensity of the flames and the charring of the wood.
