Saturday: The Drachenfels Donkeys

Mum and I went to visit my aunt today who lives in a picturesque town on the Rhine, not too far from Bonn.

This evening, as my aunt was preparing dinner Mum and I went for a walk through town and along the Rhine embankment.  This statue commemorates the local donkeys who work on the 'Drachenfels', a rock formation which is a significant local landmark.  The donkeys were used to carry stones and rocks from the quarry.  These were then used in the building of the cathedral in Cologne.    They were also used as working animals in wine production and are now used to carry children up the Drachenfels.

The evening was rounded off with a very tasty goulash!
