The Nobbies and The Penguin Tour

We headed out to the Nobbies, the landsend of Phillip Island, they have built a long board walk that goes around the cliff edge, so visitors can watch the 100 's of nesting birds, and other animals. Then it was onto the track we had been told about, that was well worth it as few people went there and we were able to see loads of wallabies, large geese which I can't remember the name of , but their neon green beak are quite impressive.

We booked in at 7pm at the Penguin Centre along with nearly 4000 other tourists ! But the tickets the children bought us weren't for the grandstand on the beach where the majority go but for the safari. We and 8 others and our ranger went to be kitted out in black wet weather gear , radio mic , ear phobes, and each given a hand held night vision telescope. Then it was a mini bus ride to a nearby beach, and down onto the beach. Eventually we reached a spot and were told to sit in a line , backs as close to the dunes as possible and not a sound or movement !. Sure enough the little penquin started to come out of the sea heading for their burrows -literally hundreds of them . Most passing within 5 metres of us and some within inches of our feet. Eventually after about 40 minutes our guide over the radio told us to stand and follow her -it was a slow walk back as we had to stop to let the penguin cross on a regular basis . No mini bus either as the road is closed at night to protect the wildlife, so more animals to watch on the way back and the penquins are great to watch as they appear totally unphased by us being there -as long as we were quiet. Brilliant evening and had I been on Phillip island another evening would have tried to go again!
