Melbourne

Quite different from Sydney although the second largest city, very pretty with parks and tree lined streets which have trams going down the middle. Started the day at Victoria Market -a massive stall market that opens at 6 am and sells loads of leather products, as well as clothes and fresh fruit and veg, we didn't see any meat or fish but there may have been somewhere. Next it was a walk to Bourke St , an area of narrow lanes and old shopping malls very similar in many ways to Bath. On to Federation Sq, where it all appears to happen which is where this shot was taken. We bought tickets to the 1pm cruise down the river Yarra, but in true Australian style when we turned up it became the 1.30pm cruise up river, that didn't actually turn up till 2pm anyway ! More scary than the Sydney bridge climb as the clearence between boat and 3 of the bridges were a matter of inches !(due to exceptionally high tide) Finally we jumped on the free old tram that does a circular route around the town with a commentary of what is what. This evening we are back on the tram to go to Southbank which apparently is packed with life in the evenings from casino's to eating places, and buildings that have flumes of fire reaching high into the sky from the roof tops.
