The Twelve Apostles
Still raining this morning, and temperature down to 10 which wasn't what I expected when we signed up to come to Australia !. We continued along The Great Ocean Road ,first stop was Cape Otway Lighthouse, the first mainland lighthouse to be built in Australia (1848). The road down to it was packed with koalas some of which were actually awake so that was good to see, we even had a kangaroo cross the road in front of us. The rain, wind and general poor conditions put us off splashing the cash to go up in the actual lighthouse so having walked a bit of the coastal path, headed back to the ocean road. The road leaves the coast and climbs, we needed petrol and stopped at a remote little shop with just one pump that you use yourself and tell the attdendant in the shop what you took. It took three attempts just to make it work ! We got to The Twelve Apostles hoping that the rain would ease just for a while ,but it didn't and so it was a quick few photos ,each one hoping the camera wouldn't get too wet - (I never considered we would need an umbrella out here!) And also hoping too that the strong/gale force winds wouldn't wreck my chances of holding it still enough. There were many other pretty bays along the road,The Bay of Islands is a perfectly formed little bay with loads of stacks like the apostles - by now at least the rain had stopped ! After this we were back into dairy farming country and the size and nunber of herds/farms amazed us. We think we even saw a possum alive on the side of the road -(about twice the size of a hedgehog). Tonight we are staying at Port Fairy another lovely little bay, the hotel is litterly on the waters edge and even if the sun isnt shining the rain has stopped at last (still a strong cold wind so jumpers and coats are standard ware)
