Red Object!

On this day, I was scheduled to give a lecture (and present prizes to third-year researchers) in Dublin, but not until 5pm. So it was an ideal opportunity to spend most of the day on tourism. We went on the coast railway from Dublin to Greystones and Wicklow, and then through beautiful wooded and hilly country to Arklow.

This wonderfully bright device, manufactured by The Railway Signal Co Ltd, Liverpool, was preserved along with other similar artefacts at the railway station of Greystones. It was paired with a similar device at the other end of the old single-track line, and was an 'electronic' (their word) electromagnetic interlocking device that dispensed tokens to train drivers only if there was no oncoming train. It's been replaced (but not so long ago, in fact) by computer signalling: SHAME!

Greystones is a quiet town, but has excellent coastal scenery and a pretty turbulent sea.
