Shits on Durham

~backblip~

If yesterday was Cathedral Day, today was Viaduct Day. We had a big distance to cover, from Bourges to Albi through the Massif Central, so we took the autoroute for the first time. I find motorways a bit boring normally, but the scenery and huge height climbed meant I had no trouble staying awake for a couple of hundred miles.

We stopped at a service area and through a stroke of luck, found ourselves at a viewing point for the Garabit viaduct, built by Eiffel and for a long time the highest bridge in the world. It was a nice taster for the main attraction of the day, the Millau viaduct. It's a really impressive piece of engineering, the highest road bridge in Europe, and soars 270m above the River Tarn. Definitely worth the EUR7.50 toll!

I was pretty sure that I was going to blip the viaduct, but then we arrived in Albi, the starting point for Cathar day tomorrow (we like to theme our days!) and the view took my breath away. The picture probably doesn't even do it justice, it's a stunning looking city.

In the words of my boyfriend, "shits on Durham".

PS: we both love Durham :)
