Famine cottage

Bank holiday over here, so we headed away from humanity into the hills. It was truly gorgeous, wild and remote. We passed a holy well, an early monastic site, a hill fort, standing stones and several famine cottages. This one, like all the others, was slowly being reclaimed into the mountainside. They all follow the same pattern - built of dry stone wall they are usually just one, now roofless, room with maybe a little barn built on the side for animals. The windows are tiny, maybe once shuttered, as is the door. They are always near a stream and usually look out into the bay. This one was in a very sheltered bowl in the side of the mountain surrounded by bog myrtle, wild mint, and meadow sweet so the smell was gorgeous. We also so a wild goat - big, black, hairy with huge horns but too far away for a decent blip. A very satisfying walk - and we had chocolate :)
