Love is like an hourglass.....

Except this one runs for exactly 37 minutes!

We found this glass at work a few months ago. I've worked there for 31 years and never knew about it, never seen it used and have no idea what it's for.

The Faculty has 5 people with degrees in Science and not one of us can come up with a decent suggestion as to the purpose of this timer.

But it is a thing of beauty and since it was unearthed it's sat on the bench in our Prep Room and every so often someone gives it a turn and we watch the sand trickle through.

It's an enigma.

Why orange sand?
Why 37 minutes?
Where is the case? It must have had one, surely?

I shot this at about 3.30 today, because I was at a loss for an idea.
Tonight we got a call from D & V to say they wouldn't be at the regular Thursday night quiz, because V's Mum has basically come home to die.
She's a remarkable lady, born on the border between Poland and Russia, switched nationality several times due to border disputes, exiled to Siberia as a teenager, looked after her younger siblings, rescued at the end of WWII and sent to Kenya, moved to the UK and lived in Manchester for many years, eventually became so old and frail that she moved in with D & V, then a care home, then a Nursing home and today back to D & V for what is probably the final chapter in a truly full and remarkable life. She's 97 now but in the years I've known her(not many) she has gone back through her life, she was fluent in English, but she lost that a few years ago and reverted to fluent Polish and then about two years ago she lost the Polish and went back to fluent Russian

As my dad would say "She's had a good innings". The end can't be far off, the Boss went to see her tonight and as a nurse she's seen many people complete their journey, and says the old lady hasn't got long. We both just hope it ends peacefully for her as she goes through the memories of a life well lived.
