Anemones on Ice
The blackbird woke me at 5.45 am. He was going for it loud and clear just outside my open bedroom window. It was hardly light.
Turned out to be a good thing because instead of the rain or snow that was predicted it was fine and frosty. The air temperature was -2º, which could ruin my next season's fruit crop. I was out before sunup to spray the blossoms. There had been rain because there were frozen raindrops hung up all over the place. The calyx of the left-hand anemone contains a pool of frozen water. See in large.
Later in the day these two flowers were standing proud, with their petals opened wide like satellite dishes catching the sun's rays.
The snow fell down south. In Invercargill, our southernmost city, the indoor stadium collapsed under the weight of it. Fortunately the people inside escaped in time.
