Today's the day .................... for sense and accessibility

Went to a brilliant seminar today in the Lanternhouse in Ulverston, Cumbria which was all about making your organisation more accessible for deaf, visually impaired and disabled audiences in general. Apparently 1 in 5 of the population of the UK has some sort of disability that makes it more difficult for them to enjoy what's on offer in the arts world.

We heard from a variety of places like the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford who have developed a programme of services for people with disabilities including audio described performances, touch tours, sign language interpretation and open captioning. It was all very inspiring and has given me lots of ideas to take back to my place of work.

But the star of the show had to be the chap who 'signed' everything for the people attending who were hearing impaired. I couldn't take my eyes off him - he was absolutely brilliant!

Mmmh - now that's something that I would like to learn how to do .........
