Today my Art and Architecture class went on a field trip to Stephansdom. This is the staircase to the pulpit. Do you see the little marks that kind of look like someone tried to carve a swastica in it? Those are actually the builders' signatures. Whenever an apprentice would finish a section of the pulpit, they would put a defining mark on it acting as their signature to indicate that they were the one that made that part, so if there was anything wrong with it Master Pilgrim would know who to blame.
