analysis:
"your old stuff is now worth a fortune"
this unique awareness campaign for the league against cancer is the brainchild of advertising agency y&r peru. instead of resorting to shockingly graphic images or metaphorical pictorials, y&r decided to center the campaign around the pros of growing old. the two concepts of cancer and aging are intertwined, but not normally in such a way. usually, it is: aging=higher risk of cancer, and not: beating cancer=enjoy the benefits of aging.
how do we encourage people to regularly get tested for all types of cancers? show them the benefits of growing old! the audience viewing these awareness posters has to make a few inferences:
1. if you detect cancer early on, your chances of survival are much greater;
2. thus, you will get the chance to grow old and enjoy life;
3. and yes, there are definitely things to look forward to in old age!
the effectiveness of such a campaign is debatable because it's not like people do not take the time and make the effort to get their annual tests because they don't want to grow old, and would actually prefer to die young than to live long enough to experience the best of old age. the posters imply this, but we are sensible enough to know that's not true.
if the agency was aiming for an out-of-the-ordinary and positively quirky outlook on early cancer detection, then by golly, i think they've done it.
here is a tv commercial from the same campaign: snore.
