Kitty Lights
Tonight IS Twelfth Night!
The decorations MUST come down within the next 90 minutes. Leaving the decorations up would cause a disaster. Tree-spirits live in the greenery, and the greenery has been brought into the house to provide a safe haven for the tree-spirits during the harsh midwinter days. It is now necessary to return the greenery back outside to release the tree-spirits into the countryside once again. Failure to do release the spirits would mean that vegetation would not be able to start growing again (spring would not return), leading to an agricultural disaster. What's more, if you leave the greenery inside, the tree-spirits will cause mischief in the house until they are released, and there's undoubtedly enough mischief in this house to do without unnecessary extra!
However...
... these Kitty Lights, sent like the Tree-Cat (see 5 January) from Boston by my sister, are allowed* to remain openly in our house throughout the year. (There is an official line that says, in any case, that decorations left up after Twelfth Night must be left up all year.) What better time to show them than this evening, when the other angels, musical instruments, and all the rest must go to sleep for eleven months or so, and the tree must go outside?
Happy Epiphany. Happy New Year. Everyone!
*The truth is, they are fixed in such a way as to make it pretty difficult to take them down. They aren't green, anyway, and contain (indoor) cat-spirits, not outdoor tree-spirits.
