At that moment, beneath the church, things weren't going exactly to plan for the Major.

In a nutshell, Craig and Steve - or Dumb and Dumber, as Adam thought of them - felt they'd reached the limit of their "henchman" job description. As far as they were concerned, "menacing muscle-bound thug" was as far as they were willing to go.

So when the Major had pulled two handguns from his holdall and invited them to take one each, they'd looked at each other and made a snap decision. Adam would have been amazed at how fast they could think when they needed to.

Craig - who fancied himself the smart one - spoke for them both. "Sorry, boss - not for us. We didn't get into this to kill anyone, did we, Stevie."

"No," mumbled Stevie.

"So," continued Craig, emboldened, "if you want any killing done, you'll have to do it yourself, boss."

The Major appeared to think for a second, then nodded slowly. "No, you're absolutely right, I see that now."

And with that, he shot them both in the head.

"And don't call me boss, old son. It's Major, remember?"

In the circumstances, he wasn't surprised that neither Craig nor Stevie replied.
