Mystery

We took our friends to the Long Crendon Mystery Plays today.

I couldn't very well take photographs during the performance, so this shot is from the interval. We see one of the two angels setting up her halo. In view also are various monks and a knight... I have made a short sequence of the halo becoming attached!

The plays were performed in the parish church, and the 13th century setting was perfect for the performances. Some moments when it was almost completely dark and the choir was singing medieval music were magical.

There were four plays performed this evening. Each play originated with a Trade or Craft Guild. For example, The Butchers' Play presented the Crucifixion of Christ. The others were The Harrowing of Hell (Saddlers), The Resurrection (Carpenters), and Doubting Thomas and the Ascension (Scriveners). Here you see Mrs Scharwenka studying the synopses of the second pair of plays during the interval.

The whole event was much more interesting than I had anticipated, and most unusual. I'm glad we went.

We had intended to spend a little time showing our visitors the small town of Thame, close to Long Crendon, but even though there was short break in the rain, it was bitterly cold with a strong wind. So we only went for a short and brisk march around the centre. However, I took this photograph of a cute dwelling, which was right by where we parked our car.
